# The chat

Ask any major AI model anything, pay only for the answers you get, and keep your conversations in your own account.

## How do I start a chat?

Open Chat, press New chat, type in the Message Nija box and press Send.

Stop ends a reply while it is still being written.

- [Chat](https://nija.africa/chat)

## What do the suggestions on an empty chat do?

Tapping a suggestion under Start a conversation puts it in the message box for you to change or send, and nothing is sent or charged until you press Send.

Tapping another suggestion swaps out the one you tapped before, and words you typed yourself always stay in the box. While you are signed out, a suggestion takes you to the sign-in page instead.

## What are the questions offered under a reply?

When a reply finishes, the chat can offer up to three Suggested follow-ups under it, and tapping one puts that question in the message box for you to change or send.

Nothing is sent or charged until you press Send, and words you already typed stay in the box. The suggestions belong to the newest reply only, so they are gone when you reopen the conversation.

## How do I see what my chats cost?

The chat shows the credits used this session at the top, and Activity lists every request with its model and its cost.

On a phone the top of the chat shows your Balance instead, and each paid reply still shows its cost under it.

- [Activity](https://nija.africa/activity)

## Is the balance in the chat up to date?

Yes: the balance card in the chat checks your balance again when the chat opens, when you come back to it from another tab or app, after each reply or other paid action, and after you redeem a voucher, so a top-up made elsewhere shows without reloading.

After you press Stop, or if your connection drops while a reply is coming in, the card checks several more times over the next minute and a half, because what a cut-off reply used is charged a little after it stops.

A dash in place of the figure means your balance is not known yet, for example before you sign in, and the card never shows a guessed number instead.

The balance shows two decimals, like the cost under each reply, so a reply that used a hundredth of a credit takes a hundredth off it.

## Can I show the chat a picture?

Yes, with a model that reads pictures: press Attach image (📎), paste a screenshot into the message box, or drag a picture onto the box, and up to five pictures go with your next message.

Nothing is sent or charged until you press Send. The ✕ beside a picture takes it back out, and switching to a model that cannot read pictures removes them all.

A large photo is made smaller before it is sent, to 2048 pixels on its longer side, so it goes quickly on a slow connection.

The pictures stay with the chat so you can ask more about them, so each later reply in that chat sends them again and is charged for them again. Once a chat holds many pictures, the oldest are no longer sent, though you still see them.

A picture let go anywhere outside the message box is not taken, and the words you were typing stay where they are.

If a picture is not taken, a line under the message box says why: the model cannot read pictures, so pick one that can, or the picture could not be read from your device.

## How do I copy a reply or a piece of code?

Press the Copy button (⧉) on a reply to copy its text, or the one at the top of a code block to copy only that code, and the button reads Copied for a moment once it is done.

Copying a reply leaves out the suggested follow-up questions, and copying a code block takes exactly the code it shows.

If your browser blocks the copy, the chat selects the text instead, so you can copy it with your own keys or a long press. Copying sends nothing to Nija and uses no credits.

## Can the chat read a reply out loud?

Yes: press Read aloud (🔊) on a reply and your device reads it out in its own voice, and pressing the same button again (⏹) stops it.

It reads the reply as the chat shows it, without formatting marks or the suggested follow-up questions, and it stops when you open another conversation.

Reading aloud happens on your device, so it sends nothing to Nija and uses no credits. If your browser cannot speak, the button is not shown.

## Can I speak instead of typing?

Yes: press Voice input (🎤) and speak, and your words are added to the end of what is already in the message box, for you to check and send.

Your browser's own speech service turns your voice into text, so dictating uses no credits and nothing reaches Nija until you press Send. If your browser cannot listen, the button is not shown, and if the microphone is blocked or missing, a line under the box says which and what to do.

## How does the chat show code in a reply?

Code in a reply sits in its own block, coloured so keywords, quoted text, numbers and comments stand apart, with the language named at the top when the reply gives one.

The colours follow your light or dark theme, and a long line scrolls sideways instead of wrapping, so the code stays exactly as written. A shared conversation page shows code the same way.

## Can the chat show maths formulas?

Yes: when a reply holds a formula, the chat shows it typeset the way a textbook prints it rather than as raw symbols.

The first reply with a formula can take a moment to typeset, and its words show straight away while it does.

If you are offline before this device has ever shown a formula, formulas stay as plain text and the rest of the reply still reads normally.

A formula on a line of its own that is wider than the reply scrolls sideways inside it, the way a long line of code does.

## Can I rename, delete, export or share a conversation?

Yes: a conversation can be renamed or deleted, saved with Export as Markdown or Export as JSON, or shared as a read-only page with Share link, which Revoke link switches off.

## How do I find my conversations by tag?

Tag a conversation with Add a tag, the 🏷 button on its row in your conversation list, then tap that tag above the list to show only the conversations that carry it.

The tags above the list are the tags of the conversations in your list, and the ✕ beside the chosen one shows every conversation again.

With words in the search box as well, the list keeps only the conversations that match both. To take a tag off a conversation, tap it under that conversation; tag names may not hold a comma.

## Does the chat remember me?

Nija can remember your answer preferences to improve its replies, and What Nija remembers lets you view, edit or erase them at any time.

Switch off Keep learning from my chats and nothing new is learned from you.

A short note above an empty chat tells you this, and its Manage memory button opens these controls; once you close the note, it stays closed for you on that device, and anyone else who signs in there still sees it.

## How do I save a prompt I use often?

Open Settings, the gear (⚙) at the top of the chat, type the prompt under Saved prompts and press Save, and from then on one tap on it puts it in the message box.

A tapped prompt lands in the message box for you to change or send, words you already typed stay there, and nothing is sent until you press Send.

Saved prompts are kept in your account, so they are there on any device you sign in on, and the ✕ beside one deletes it everywhere. Until you save one, the list offers a few ready-made prompts to start from.

## How do I change a message I already sent?

Press Edit on your message, change the text and confirm, and the chat sends it again from that point, removing the messages that followed it.

The fresh reply is paid for like any other.

## Can I chat without saving the conversation?

Yes: switch on Temporary chat and the conversation is not saved to your account, so it is gone once you leave it.

Switching it on starts a fresh conversation, and while it is on the chat is marked Temporary, not saved. Replies still use credits.

## Where do I read the notices Nija sends me?

Open Notifications, the bell in the chat, to read the notices Nija has sent you with the unread ones marked, and press Mark as read on one or Mark all as read to clear them.

The bell counts the notices you have not read yet.

## How do I report a harmful reply?

Press Report on the reply, choose what is wrong with it, add details if you wish and press Submit report, and Nija's moderation team reviews it.

A report does not promise a particular outcome, and reporting the same reply again counts once. A shared conversation page has its own Report button, which works without signing in.
